Rutland Water Weather
The weather can have a significant impact on what you’re doing at any location, and Rutland Water is no exception. Being outdoors, exposed to the elements, and often walking or cycling away from your car, means it’s important to know what’s in store.
Whether you’re planning a day trip or a longer stay, knowing what to expect can make all the difference. It helps you know what to pack, what to bring with you, what time of day to visit, and even what time of year is best to spend time here.
How the weather can make a difference
For starters, the weather can be key as to what activities are available and how you make your plans. There’s lots of things to do at Rutland Water.
If it’s raining heavily or it’s forecast to be a frosty morning, you may not want to go cycling or walking at Rutland Water.
On the other hand, if it’s sunny and warm, you may be more likely to try water sports like kayaking, paddle boarding or windsurfing. Or perhaps bring a picnic to enjoy sat on the side of the reservoir.
Knowing what the weather is going to be like can also help you get more out of your trip. Imagine trying to take in the stunning views of Rutland Water on a foggy day – not quite the same as on a clear, sunny day!
And if there’s gale force winds forecast, then attractions such as the Rutland Belle, which provides a 40 minute sailing on the water, may not be running.

The warmer weather also provides the perfect opportunity to take a relaxing walk around the picturesque shoreline or enjoy a picnic or BBQ (there are designated BBQ spots) with family and friends.
As autumn approaches, the reservoir takes on a different character. The changing colors of the trees surrounding the water create a stunning backdrop for nature lovers and photographers. The cooler temperatures also offer a great opportunity to go birdwatching and see the many species that call Rutland Water their home.
In winter, the reservoir is a lot quieter but remains a haven for wildlife. Visitors can watch as thousands of birds flock to the water’s edge. The crisp winter air provides the perfect setting for a long walk, and the views across the water can be breathtaking.
And in spring, birdsong fills the air and the sight of new growth is everywhere. The warmer weather provides the perfect conditions for cycling, and visitors can explore the long but gentle trail that winds around the water’s edge.
